The Bearded Dragon is native to Australia. They live in arid, rocky semi-desert and the bordering forest areas.

They are very quick, so having an enclosure which opens a t the top will be best; make sure the top has a screen. Aquariums can be used for housing dragons. Enclosures must be well ventilated. Make sure there is on l y one animal per enclosure, they will fight. Adults will eat t heir you ng, as well. Substrate for the enclosure ca n be newspaper or butcher paper. Do not use sand, shavings, or food pellets for bedding; these materials will cause impactions & respiratory problems. Bearded Dragon enclosures need to be cleaned frequently.

Provide basking and hiding areas. Branches can be place into the enclosure; angle it toward the warmer end of the cage where the basking light is. A hiding place should be provided on the cooler side of the cage.

Daytime temperatures should be approximately 76-86 degrees; the basking area should be 90-105 degrees. The heat source should be placed outside and above the enclosure. Du ring the evening the temperature re may be kept at 70-75 degrees. U/V lights are necessary to produce Vitamin D-3. Bearded Dragons are diurnal lizards, so they require at least 12 hours under a full spectrum u/v light.

Bearded Dragons are omnivores; they feed on invertebrates and small vertebrates. They like fruits and flowers, as well. Plants foods should consist of 60-65% of the diet; items you can feed are mustard greens, turnip greens, and collard greens (leaves). Prey items should make up 35-40% of diet; you ca n feed crickets, meal worms, kingworms, mouse pinks and hissing cockroaches. I f your dragon goes after the insects and leaves the plant items, feed plant items an hour before insects. Provide a shallow water dish at all times; change water daily.
